Delivering bespoke SEND environments to inspire learners

Our philosophy is to bring together knowledge and expertise from across the public and private sector in order to improve the provision of purpose-built SEND schools across the UK.

The bespoke nature of SEND provision cannot be met by a single design or construction solution. To provide our end users with an exceptional service, we consult with all stakeholders from a project’s outset to ensure we offer inclusive facilities, designed to meet specific student needs. These projects can be delivered on both a ‘standalone’ basis, or coexist alongside a mainstream educational environment.

We care about creating environments that enable children and young people to thrive, and are committed to exploring how the process involved in creating these buildings and estates that enable children and young people to reach their potential can be optimised.

White paper: Building Better Futures Report - Facilitating Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

We recently led an extensive independent research programme featuring insights and recommendations from representatives from local authorities in Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire; head teachers from leading SEND schools across the region; architects, designers, and consultants with extensive SEND school delivery experience; representatives from national bodies including the National Autistic Society; and parental support groups including Sensational Families.

The Building Better Futures report explores models of best practice in SEND school delivery and includes suggestions for shaping future design and delivery of SEND schools, which will better meet the needs of this fast-growing cohort of pupils. Our research is ongoing, and we look forward to sharing more with you in the future.

Increased demand for specially-designed and built schools that provide the best possible learning environment for children and young people with Special Educational Needs (SEN) is improving provision and driving forward innovation - creating a step-change in their delivery. Glenwood School in Benfleet, Essex is an example of just how far design and build has progressed since dedicated facilities for SEN children came into play some 40 years ago. The £15 million education complex was delivered by a project team led by Morgan Sindall Construction and was opened in time for the autumn term in September 2017.

Morgan Sindall Construction has recently handed over a £19 million expansion to Lexden Springs School, a special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) school, in Colchester. The major relocation and expansion project has increased the school’s capacity from 120 to 200 pupils.
