Morgan Sindall Infrastructure's QUEST programme

Welcome back to our QUEST page. QUEST is a prestigious and exciting scheme; our students find QUEST professionally and personally rewarding, gaining a strong foundation in engineering skills, and building networks and friendships along the way.

'I want you to make a good choice ... one that's right for you.'

I hope you had a great QUEST interview day and have now met lots of our ‘very’ civil engineers! I enjoyed meeting 12 of you at interview and many more on our stand.

I hope the reminders here are useful in ranking the sponsoring organisations you met - I want you to make a good choice, but most importantly one that's right for you.

We're proud of QUEST, and invest lots of time in mentoring all our students. If we match, you'll join a highly respected programme in our organisation. Our scholars enjoy effective summer placements, and orientation events to make them feel part of our family. We want 20 scholars to join us this year - we can't take all the candidates that select us, but the higher you rank us, the more likely we'll match.

I joined Morgan Sindall Infrastructure in 1994, having started my career as a graduate engineer 10 years before. I chose this business because of its collaborative ethos and its clear ambition to grow and be the best, but to delight customers along the way. I’ve never regretted this decision, and get a buzz from seeing other young people join us and develop on this journey.

I look forward to meeting our successful new scholars at our induction and welcome event at our Head Office on 4 December.

Tony O'Donnell, Morgan Sindall Infrastructure Engineering Director and QUEST scheme leader

'We enjoyed meeting you!'

We enjoyed meeting you on 6 September - it was an inspirational day and our teams were impressed by every candidate. Your head may be spinning with facts, questions, ideas and dreams. We hope we were able to convey our passion for engineering, having fun and show you the pride we take in delivering some of the UK's most significant infrastructure schemes.

You now have some tough decisions to make, as ICE requests your company preferences. Obviously we want you to rank us highly, but please make the best decision for YOU, not us. Use this page, download our company booklet and QUEST scheme booklet, and watch our students’ videos, to remind yourself how we run QUEST at Morgan Sindall Infrastructure. Use this information to compare our approach with the other organisations you met. Think about your values and how they align with all the companies you spoke to.

'Every day is a new challenge.'

Terri Seel – 2012 QUEST graduate, now Site Agent

Hear what Terri has to say about her experience on our QUEST programme. In the time since her graduation she's achieved several promotions and is now a site agent in charge of a section of work on the M5 Oldbury Viaduct scheme.

She was mentored by the same senior engineer throughout her sponsorship, becoming a Chartered Civil Engineer in 2017 and the overall winner of the Women in Construction and Engineering Awards in 2015.

Lucy Manners

'I feel valued as a graduate.'

Lucy Manners, Graduate Site Engineer

After completing my degree with the support of Morgan Sindall Infrastructure through the QUEST scholarship and summer placements, it was clear that they were the company I wanted to begin my career as a graduate with.

The variety of placements that Morgan Sindall Infrastructure offers meant that I could experience a number of different sectors, developing a range of transferable skills each summer.

I started my graduate career as a site engineer at Heathrow Airport, working on taxiway redevelopment projects immediately adjacent to the main runways. My team was incredibly supportive which enabled me to quickly settle in my role. From day one, I was given real responsibility on site, and with the help of my team I have been able to develop new skills quickly.

The graduate scheme is particularly well structured, with modules to develop both professional and technical skills. The mentoring programme is effective and has allowed me to now move on to take up a secondment to a consultant to develop my knowledge of that side of the industry.

I feel valued as a graduate and look forward to returning from my secondment to continue my career development with Morgan Sindall Infrastructure.

Alison Chippington

'You're encouraged to be innovative and to challenge.'

Alison Chippington, Pre Contract Manager

I’ve been at Morgan Sindall Infrastructure for more than 25 years. I started as a summer placement student during my civil engineering degree. At uni it’s all very theoretical but I really loved being on site – that’s why I stayed. I joined the graduate training programme and became a chartered engineer six years later, and now I am a fellow of the ICE. I mentor both undergraduates and graduates, and really enjoy sharing their passion for engineering.

Morgan Sindall Infrastructure is a great place to work because you’re encouraged to be innovative and to challenge – we are always looking to improve.

It’s my job to help identify opportunities for Morgan Sindall Infrastructure and lead the team to win that work. I like feeling that I can make a difference and I can contribute to the overall success of Morgan Sindall Infrastructure. You can really be a part of it and influence the direction of the company. We do such a wide range of work and I’m very proud of that.

Our varied work and key customers

Morgan Sindall Infrastructure is a large and varied business. We’ve provided a few project case studies in our QUEST booklet but the possibilities are endless! Click to read more about our work in the Rail, Highways, Water, Aviation, Energy and Nuclear sectors, or our Engineering Solutions business.

We work across these markets completing some of the biggest and most prestigious projects in the UK as well as smaller local projects – we treat all our customers the same way regardless of project size and our QUEST scholars get to work on a range of them before they eventually join us as graduates.

You may also wish to view a selection of project case studies.

Deciding your company preferences

You've now met all the companies you've been interviewed by, and are able to compare and contrast each organisation's style and passion. To help you remember our meeting, we've left some reminders here about how we operate as a business and where our QUEST programme fits into that.

We've created these resources to help you expand your understanding of QUEST, Morgan Sindall Infrastructure and how you could fit into our business. We hope they'll help you make the right choice for you when responding to the ICE.

Please download our QUEST booklet, which contains information to help you on your journey, and our Boundless Possibilities booklet, which provides a comprehensive overview of our business. You can also see what our engineering placement students are saying about working for us.

We interviewed 48 candidates on 6 September in our search for the 20 that will join our highly respected cohort of current and former QUEST scholars. We hope you found it a stimulating and enjoyable chat and that you had fun with our people.

You now need to tell ICE your preferences, and we have to rank our interviewees. ICE's process then aims to provide the best matches. Not everyone can get a QUEST scholarship but the higher we rank each other the more chance of a match. We plan to award 20 scholarships this year - these usually go to candidates who list us as their first preference. Good luck!
