Morgan Sindall Infrastructure's QUEST programme

Welcome to our QUEST page and thank you for applying to the Institution of Civil Engineers for a 2019 QUEST scholarship.

Since 2007 we’ve proudly partnered with the ICE to deliver QUEST, supporting more than 100 students. Our students find QUEST professionally and personally rewarding, giving them an excellent foundation in engineering skills and building networks and friendships along the way. Should you be successful in being invited to the annual interview day in Westminster you’ll need to shortlist up to five organisations that you’d like to become your QUEST sponsor company. These pages tell you about our approach to let you decide if we should be one of your five.

Choosing a QUEST sponsor company

You’re one of around 250 applicants for this year’s QUEST scholarship. The ICE QUEST Committee is currently reviewing and assessing all applicants to shortlist the 125 people that will be invited to the interview day and put to the 17 sponsoring companies. If you are selected you’ll then have to choose five companies that you’d like to be sponsored by.

To help you prepare for this choice we have produced this page, to accompany our sponsor profile and our QUEST scheme booklet. Please take time to read these as they will help with one of the most important career choices you’ll ever make – choosing your first graduate employer.

Tony O'Donnell, Morgan Sindall Infrastructure Engineering Director and QUEST scheme leader

Our commitment to QUEST at Morgan Sindall Infrastructure

Our QUEST programme has grown and developed over 12 years, in which time we’ve worked with the ICE and our QUEST scholars to develop our scheme to provide you with an inspirational and challenging start to your career. If sponsored by us, you join our ‘family’ in October and will start to feel like part of our organisation from thereon. We’ll allocate you a buddy from last year’s new starts, and assign a senior civil engineer to you who’ll be your personal mentor.

We are the largest user of the QUEST scheme, and are exceptionally proud of all our QUEST scholars and graduates and what they achieve. Our programme has been described as ‘exemplary’ by the ICE. Watch our video to see what some of our graduates and scholars have to say.

'Every day is a new challenge.'

Terri Seel – 2012 QUEST graduate, now Site Agent

Hear what Terri has to say about her experience on our QUEST programme. In the time since her graduation she's achieved several promotions and is now a site agent in charge of a section of work on the M5 Oldbury Viaduct scheme.

She was mentored by the same senior engineer throughout her sponsorship, becoming a Chartered Civil Engineer in 2017 and the overall winner of the Women in Construction and Engineering Awards in 2015.

Lucy Manners

'I feel valued as a graduate.'

Lucy Manners, Graduate Site Engineer

After completing my degree with the support of Morgan Sindall Infrastructure through the QUEST scholarship and summer placements, it was clear that they were the company I wanted to begin my career as a graduate with.

The variety of placements that Morgan Sindall Infrastructure offers meant that I could experience a number of different sectors, developing a range of transferable skills each summer.

I started my graduate career as a site engineer at Heathrow Airport, working on taxiway redevelopment projects immediately adjacent to the main runways. The team I worked with was incredibly supportive which enabled me to quickly settle in my role. From day one, I was given real responsibility on site, and with the help of my team I have been able to develop new skills quickly.

The graduate scheme is particularly well structured, with modules to develop both professional and technical skills. The mentoring programme is effective and useful and has allowed me to now move on to take up a secondment to a consultant to develop my knowledge of that side of the industry.

I feel valued as a graduate and look forward to returning from my secondment to continue my career development with Morgan Sindall Infrastructure.

Alison Chippington

'You're encouraged to be innovative and to challenge.'

Alison Chippington, Pre Contract Manager

I’ve been at Morgan Sindall Infrastructure for more than 25 years. I started as a summer placement student during my civil engineering degree. At uni it’s all very theoretical but I really loved being on site – that’s why I stayed. I joined the graduate training programme and became a chartered engineer six years later, and now I am a fellow of the ICE. I now have the opportunity to mentor both undergraduates and graduates, and really enjoy sharing their passion for engineering.

Morgan Sindall Infrastructure is a great place to work because you’re encouraged to be innovative and to challenge – we are always looking to improve.

I work collaboratively with everyone, from the site teams to our joint venture partners. It’s my job to help identify opportunities for Morgan Sindall Infrastructure and lead the team to win that work. I like feeling that I can make a difference and I can contribute to the overall success of Morgan Sindall Infrastructure. You can really be a part of it and influence the direction of the company. We do such a wide range of work and I’m very proud of that. It’s incredibly rewarding to be a part of a close team which makes these complex projects happen.

Our varied work and key customers

As you’ve probably gathered, Morgan Sindall Infrastructure is a large and varied business. We’ve provided a few project case studies in our QUEST booklet but the possibilities are endless! Click to read more about our work in the Rail, Highways, Water, Aviation, Energy and Nuclear sectors, or our Engineering Solutions business.

We work across these markets completing some of the biggest and most prestigious projects in the UK as well as smaller local projects – we treat all our customers the same way regardless of project size and our QUEST scholars get to work on a range of them before they eventually join us as graduates.

You may also wish to view a selection of project case studies.

Useful resources

If you’re shortlisted to attend the interview day, you’ll need to choose the five companies you’d like to be sponsored by. We hope these pages will help you to quickly understand our organisation, its values and why QUEST is such a successful programme for our scholars.

Our QUEST Booklet tells you more about the scheme and what we look for and our video diaries show you what some of our scholars have done on recent placements and why they love what they do. We wish you well in the next stage of the process and should you be successful don’t forget to come back here for more information about the next stage.
