Morgan Sindall Construction's second phase of a major development programme at Torquay Academy is underway, which will involve a £2.2 million project to create a new 300-seat theatre and upgrades to the school’s dining and sports facilities.

Torquay Academy, in Devon, has undergone a significant development programme to expand its teaching and communal facilities, which have all been delivered by construction and infrastructure company Morgan Sindall.

The project is being delivered on behalf of Torquay Academy in partnership with Corporate Building Consultancy Ltd.

The latest phase of developments will comprise an extension to the school’s dining room, multi-use hall and alterations of the existing multi-use games area (MUGA).

A new 300-seat theatre will be created with two changing rooms and two PE classrooms, which will be built behind the sports hall on the edge of the MUGA.

Construction work is expected to complete in spring 2019.

During the first phase of construction works in 2017, Morgan Sindall refurbished two classrooms into state-of-the-art science labs.

Earlier this year, the company celebrated topping out at the school’s new classroom block, which includes six new classrooms and three dry changing rooms. Work is scheduled to complete in August 2018.

Nigel Whelan, area director at Morgan Sindall, said: “Torquay Academy has undergone an exciting transformation of its facilities in recent years and we’re very proud to have played a central role in making the school’s vision a reality.
“We’re so pleased to have been appointed to deliver the next step in this exciting journey for Torquay Academy and to redevelop its dining and sports facilities. The new space will create a bright and modern communal and teaching environment for both students and staff and we’re looking forward to handing over their new facilities next year.”
Mark Brothwell at Corporate Building Consultancy, said: “Working with Morgan Sindall has been a good experience. The team are dedicated, responsive and professional. We look forward to creating a quality product with a collaborative contractor whose main objective is to provide a first-class educational facility.”
Principal at Torquay Academy, Steve Margetts, said: “We are delighted to be able to offer even more exciting facilities for our brilliant students. The theatre space will support our many students who regularly perform in music, drama and dance. We look forward to the opening night of next year's school musical that will mark the official opening of the theatre."

Morgan Sindall’s project partners include Kensington Taylor Architects, Corporate Building Consultancy Ltd, Airey & Coles and Services Design Solution Ltd.
