Morgan Sindall Construction tops out at £27 million addition to University of Warwick's estate

Morgan Sindall Construction has celebrated topping out at the University of Warwick’s new £27 million Mathematical Sciences Building, on the outskirts of Coventry.

The University’s Director of Estates, James Breckon, was joined by Morgan Sindall Construction’s Area Director in the Midlands, Richard Fielding and representatives of the departments of Computer Science, Maths and Statistics to mark the occasion by decorating a steel beam on the top floor of the six-storey facility with equations and diagrams.

The 68,490 sq ft building is a key strategic development for the University, which is part of the Russell Group of Universities, which will enable closer collaboration between its globally-recognised Computer Science, Mathematics and Statistics departments.

The building is structured around a main central atrium and will cater to both postgraduate and undergraduate students. It will also provide a base for a number of notable academic researchers, including some working as part of the high-profile national institute for data science: The Alan Turing Institute.

The Morgan Sindall Construction site team is currently removing the external scaffolds and internal works are progressing well.

Construction work is scheduled to complete in time for the building’s opening at the start of the 2018 academic year.

Richard Fielding said: “We’re incredibly pleased to mark this important milestone in the building’s construction.
“Once complete, it will not only be a flagship in the University’s estate, but also an international centre of academic excellence for subjects vital to many of the wider region’s core and developing industries, such as advanced manufacturing and electric vehicle technology.”

James Breckon added: “Our campus is seeing major investments on all fronts at the moment – everything from key mathematical and scientific facilities like this one, to projects for arts, sports, medicine and more. It was a pleasure to meet everyone involved in the building of this facility and take a moment to reflect and thank them for all their commitment and hard work in collaborating to achieve this exciting milestone. I very much look forward to completion and bringing the facility smoothly into use for my academic colleagues.”

The Mathematical Sciences Building was made possible thanks to a generous grant of £2,000,000 from The Wolfson Foundation, and additional donations made by alumni and friends of Computer Science, Mathematics and Statistics at Warwick.
