Morgan Sindall sponsors Jericho Primary School, Whitehaven to compete in 'FIRST LEGO League' global robotics challenge

Morgan Sindall has sponsored Jericho Primary School’s participation in a global robotics challenge called FIRST® LEGO® League. The challenge is an international competition for primary and secondary school pupils, based on a real world scientific project.

From September 2017 until early February 2018, Morgan Sindall’s sponsorship will provide the school with three mentors to support the children (aged 8 to 11) through the competition. The mentors, who all work for Morgan Sindall, will visit the school on a fortnightly basis to help support the children through the challenge of designing their own robot.

The mentors’ main focus is to help the children develop skills which will stand them in good stead for their working lives. Morgan Sindall has also enabled the school to purchase the FIRST® LEGO® League team kit required to participate in the competition.

This year’s FIRST® LEGO® League project HYDRO DYNAMICSSM focuses on teaching the students about water - how it is found, transported, used and disposed of. The competition is made up of three sections; core values, the project itself and a robot game, with the students gathering points throughout the competition. The core values section aims to help the students to understand what is at the heart of the FIRST® LEGO® League and how they can apply these values to their team and the challenge. The project section involves the students researching and designing a solution to improve the way a group of people find, transport, use or dispose of water. The final element is the robot game where the students are required to design and build a LEGO® robot that is able to solve a number of missions associated with the water project.

Jo McGill, Deputy Head of Jericho Primary School said: “The Jericho FIRST® LEGO® League team is really looking forward to getting started with the project. They love Lego and creating models and can’t wait to begin building and learning how to programme their robot. The children are excited about representing Jericho and working as a team, and being there to help each other out.”

Dave Polkey, Specialist Operations Director for Morgan Sindall said: “As part of our commitment to being a responsible business, we regularly invest in the local communities in which we work, and with this in mind, we are delighted to be supporting Jericho Primary School through the FIRST® LEGO® League competition. This is a great way to encourage and teach the next generation about the importance of science, technology, engineering and maths subjects (STEM), as well as helping them to develop vital life skills.”

Morgan Sindall is a major employer within the Cumbrian region and is one of the joint venture partners on the Infrastructure Strategic Alliance (ISA) responsible for a potential 15 year, £1.1 billion contract to provide essential infrastructure assets to the Sellafield site.

FIRST® LEGO® League was created by FIRST® founder Dean Kamen, and the owner of the LEGO® Group Kjeld Kristiansen who joined together to encourage children to learn more about science and technology.
