Morgan Sindall progresses £13.5 million Aylesbury Centre
Morgan Sindall has reached a key milestone in the construction of a multi-million pound educational centre in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire.
Work to construct the University Campus Aylesbury Vale (UCAV) project, which is being funded and managed by Aylesbury Vale District Council, is underway and the project team is starting work to erect the building’s frame.
The centre, which is due to open in autumn 2015, comprises a four-storey building, which will include educational facilities and public amenities including restaurants, cafes and a new public square.
The building’s upper three floors will provide educational facilities for tenants, Buckinghamshire Education Skills and Training (BEST). BEST is a partnership between Aylesbury College and Buckinghamshire New University, which offers a range of full and part-time courses.
Councillor Neil Blake, Leader of Aylesbury Vale District Council, commented: “It’s great news for businesses, students and the town generally to see the construction of the centre underway. We have worked with Morgan Sindall before and look forward to the centre being built to a high standard. This is part of the council’s ongoing investment in Aylesbury and our future tenants, Buckinghamshire New University and Aylesbury College are looking forward to September 2015 when the centre will open and give the town its first university-based presence.”
The new centre will expand the higher education offering for local residents, providing teaching space and break-out areas for students and staff. The centre aims to stimulate further economic growth in Aylesbury and across Buckinghamshire by offering a number of courses which are specifically designed to meet the local industry’s skills requirements. Around 2,000 students are expected to attend the centre.
Bob Ensch, area director at Morgan Sindall, said: “The team is making good progress on this ambitious and important scheme. University Campus Aylesbury Vale will improve and expand the educational offering available to people living locally, as well as creating new leisure options for residents. Morgan Sindall is well versed in successfully delivering large scale mixed-use projects and the team is very pleased to be bringing that expertise to bear on this project to provide a first-class facility for Aylesbury.”
The new building is being built on Walton Street at the head of the canal basin, next to the Waterside Theatre and will feature an attractive aluminium wave form roof. The ground floor atrium of the building will house an open plan reception area, as well as space for two restaurants and a cafe which will open up the area to the wider community.
