Morgan Sindall plc appointed to £6.8 million Etonbury Academy expansion project
Morgan Sindall plc has been appointed to carry out a £6.8 million scheme to expand Etonbury Academy in Bedfordshire. The team marked the start on site with a special turf cutting ceremony.
The project for Bedfordshire East Multi Academy Trust (BEMAT) is part of Central Bedfordshire Council’s school places programme and will see the project team expand the existing school to enable it to accommodate an additional 420 children in Years 5 to 11. The extra places are part of the council’s commitment to spend more than £100 million providing an extra 6,500 places in the next five years. This investment will help to meet the increasing demand for school places in the area.
The expansion project includes the construction of a new three-storey teaching block, a new staff room, dining room, four-court sports hall and refurbishments to the entrance, reception and administration area.
The Morgan Sindall project team will also construct a new fitness centre and all-weather pitch and 95 new parking places. New bike spaces will also be created, doubling the amount currently available.
The project team held a special turf cutting ceremony to mark the start of the project with local councillors, school governors and pupils all in attendance.
Neil Franklin, Morgan Sindall area director, said: “We are very pleased to have been appointed to this important scheme to transform Etonbury Academy. This is an ambitious project which will not only provide the school with much-needed additional places, but also deliver great new facilities for school users – improving the broader educational experience for all academy users.
“Our team has a great depth of experience in delivering high-quality education schemes across the country and we are looking forward to using this knowledge to maximum effect on this project.”
Morgan Sindall is on a number of key education projects across the region. Schemes on-site include a £13.5 million contract to construct the University Campus Aylesbury Vale (UCAV) educational centre in Buckinghamshire for Aylesbury Vale District Council. The company has also recently successfully completed a £18 million project to redevelop and upgrade facilities at the University of Hertfordshire.
