Stoneywood School built by Morgan Sindall Construction

Morgan Sindall Construction completes £13 million school in Aberdeen

Morgan Sindall Construction has successfully handed over a new state-of-the-art £13 million school to Aberdeen City Council in time for the start of the 2018 academic year.

Stoneywood School, located in the Bucksburn area in the north of Aberdeen, was built on the site of the former Bankhead Academy, which was demolished following a fire in 2012.

The new building, funded through the Council's five-year Capital Programme, consists of a two stream primary school and 60 place nursery, offering a new home for the school’s 434 existing pupils.

The energy-efficient site contains 16 classrooms within the single-storey building, and features solar UV panels and low energy central heating.

Each classroom has direct access to the external landscape, which includes a sensory garden, an orchard, a variety of sports facilities and a new 4G synthetic pitch. The building also features a library, flexible teaching areas and a sensory room to deliver a modern working environment for both pupils and staff.

The school is clad with natural aggregated cladding, larch timber cladding and zinc roofing. The design has been developed around a school heart concept, with a series of ‘lantern’ teaching pavilions surrounding the core community and assembly spaces.

Stuart Parker, managing director of Morgan Sindall Construction in Scotland, said: “We’re incredibly pleased to have completed this project for Aberdeen City Council and it’s great to have handed it over in time for the new 2018 school year.
“Stoneywood is the culmination of many months of collaborative work between the school, the council and all of the consultants involved. Everyone involved can take pride in transforming a once derelict site into a modern school fit for the 21st century – and one which will prove a valuable addition to the education offering in the area for generations to come.”
Councillor Douglas Lumsden said: “We are incredibly proud of the programme of school construction and Stoneywood is a very impressive new building. It will provide a wonderful environment for pupils and staff as well as for the wider community. The attention to detail is excellent and the design fits the needs of modern learning, providing the ideal platform.”
Director of architects Scott Brownrigg’s Edinburgh studio, Alex Donaldson added: “Stoneywood School is a potent example of the power of open and inclusive collaboration. Aberdeen City Council had a clear vision for Stoneywood and Scott Brownrigg team and Morgan Sindall worked closely with the Council and key stakeholders to ensure this vision became a reality.
“We are very proud of Stoneywood School. This wonderful project adds to the range of high quality, on-vision portfolio of work being delivered out of the Edinburgh studio.”
