Morgan Sindall Construction breaks ground on £8 million Hirwaun Primary School scheme

News |

Morgan Sindall Construction has begun work on an £8 million contract with Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, constructing a new building for the existing Hirwaun Primary School in Hirwaun, South Wales.

The main contractor won the project through SEWSCAP (Southeast and mid-Wales Collaborative Construction framework); a £1 billion framework which aims to drive regeneration in the region through smarter and more efficient procurement practices. The new build will accommodate 450 school places, 60 of which are for pre-school age children.

Plans for the project include a 2,600 square metre one-storey main building with 14 classrooms; a nursery; and spacious hall. A car park will provide 38 parking spaces for both staff and visitors.

The school’s design will be a sustainable low-carbon building, adhering to the highest standard under the BREEAM assessment. A flying start facility, providing government-funded childcare to the local area, will also be accessible to the general public during the day.

External amenities include ecological and habitat areas to encourage wildlife. There will also be ample space provided for exercise and sporting opportunities across two multi-use games areas and a grass pitch.

Hirwaun Primary School’s existing teaching blocks will be demolished in phases alongside construction of the new building.

This is the fourth school Morgan Sindall Construction will deliver for Rhondda Cynon Taf under the auspices of the 21st Century Schools Programme; the long term education investment scheme funded by Welsh Government.

Rob Williams, area director for Morgan Sindall Construction, said: “We are excited to begin work on Hirwaun Primary School and to continue our delivery of modern learning environments in South Wales through SEWSCAP.
“We’ve established a great collaborative relationship with the Council and the track record of well-received schools speaks to the effectiveness of long-term partnership.”
Councillor Joy Rosser, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Inclusion Services, added: “I’m pleased the Council has announced the appointment of Morgan Sindall Construction to deliver the new £10.2 million improvements at Hirwaun Primary School, which will deliver first-class learning facilities for staff and pupils by 2021 – benefiting from a significant contribution from Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools Programme.
“The Council has a good working relationship with Morgan Sindall Construction, which was the contractor for the fantastic £7.2 million Cwmaman Primary School, delivered on schedule in September 2018, with excellent engagement with the community throughout its construction. The new school is now established at the heart Cwmaman, for the benefit of local residents for generations to come.”

Work is expected to complete on the project by Spring 2021.
