Morgan Sindall to construct £1.4 million extension to Robert Bloomfield Academy
Morgan Sindall has been appointed to extend and upgrade Robert Bloomfield Academy, Shefford as part of a £1.4 million contract.
The project, for Bedfordshire East Multi Academy Trust, will involve the project team constructing a new, two-storey classroom block, which will replace temporary classrooms which the school is currently using.
The standalone building will feature eight modernised, bright and spacious classrooms. The project team will also install photovoltaic panels on the building’s roof so that solar energy can be stored and converted into electricity, reducing the school’s carbon emissions.
Adrian Rodgers, Head Teacher at Robert Bloomfield Academy, said: “Robert Bloomfield are really excited about the new classroom block. It will be a brilliant base for our Year 5 pupils and will provide wonderful facilities for the children”
The project team will also complete some external landscaping and paving, with work starting on site in October 2014. The new building will be completed in August 2015, ready for pupils and teachers to move in at the start of the new Academic Year 2015/16.
Bob Ensch, area director at Morgan Sindall, said: “The new building at Robert Bloomfield Academy will ensure that the school has improved teaching facilities, updating the space on offer to pupils and staff by replacing the current temporary facilities with modern, well-equipped classrooms.
“We are very much looking forward to getting started with the project and continuing Morgan Sindall’s commitment to delivering education projects both on time and on budget.”
The project team will be operating in a live school environment and will implement a number of measures to ensure the site remains safe. The works will be fenced off, with the project team and sub-contractors using a different entrance to the main school. Deliveries will also be timed in order to minimise disruption to staff, parents and pupils.
Morgan Sindall’s Cambridge office is currently working on a number of projects including a £4 million expansion of Brampton Primary School in Huntingdon. The Morgan Sindall project team will extend the school, building a two-storey extension which will contain eight additional classrooms and resource space for art, ICT and group working activities. Morgan Sindall is also currently on site at the new Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology Building at the University of Cambridge. The building will feature a wide range of biological laboratories, cleanrooms, sensitive laser, optics and imaging laboratories, a magnetic resonance research centre, materials and processes laboratories and an undergraduate teaching laboratory.
