Morgan Sindall completes £50 million Wigan Life Centre development
Morgan Sindall has completed a £50 million project to build a new flagship public services hub for Wigan Borough Council.
The Wigan Life Centre is one of the largest municipal facilities in the country and will deliver a range of council services and leisure facilities. Overall investment in the scheme has totalled approximately £217 million.
The 19,921 sq m centre is comprised of two key buildings; a Healthy Living Zone and an Information and Learning Zone, which are situated on either side of the city’s historic Town Hall.
The Healthy Living Zone includes a 25-metre public swimming pool with moveable floor, a separate learning pool and a gym.
The Information and Learning Zone houses a variety of services including Wigan Council, its housing and leisure partners, the NHS, and various community groups.
Jim Morgan, Morgan Sindall area director says: “The new centre is a tremendously important facility for the people of Wigan. This has been an exciting and ambitious project to work on and it’s fantastic to see people enjoying the new facilities.
“We’ve enjoyed a particularly strong partnership with Wigan Council throughout the project and we’re very pleased to have played a role in revitalising the town’s civic heart.”
Wigan Council's Cabinet Member for Customer Service, Cllr Chris Ready says: “At a time of economic uncertainty, it is great to see a major building project such as this, which has created jobs and will support the future regeneration of our borough, come to fruition.
“As our construction partner, Morgan Sindall has provided us with a world-class facility that we are certain will be envy of many other areas. Not only this, they have provided it on-time and within budget and the work is to an exceptionally high standard."
The final stage of the project, which took top prize in the UK Property Awards for Best Public Service Development, was completed in early January and the finished development is now open to the public.
Morgan Sindall has worked closely with the architectural design team of LCE Architects and Astudio on many phases of the scheme.
