Students at Torquay Academy, in Devon, have put on a show-stopping performance to celebrate the completion of their school’s new £2.2 million expansion.

Delivered by Morgan Sindall Construction, the major development programme includes a new 300-seat theatre named The Platform, as well as extensive upgrades to the school’s dining and sports facilities.

The Platform building was officially opened by Torquay Academy’s chair of governors, Vince Flower, and vice chair of governors, Leo Critchlow.

A packed-out theatre audience was invited to watch a short time-lapse video showing The Platform’s construction, followed by a 75 minute music concert performed by students.

Morgan Sindall Construction delivered Torquay Academy’s expansion in partnership with Corporate Building Consultancy Ltd.

The development includes an extension to the school’s dining room, multi-use hall and alterations of the existing multi-use games area (MUGA). The Platform features two changing rooms and two PE classrooms, which have been built behind the sports hall on the edge of the MUGA.

Torquay Academy’s expansion marks the continuation of an ongoing partnership with Morgan Sindall Construction. In 2018, the company delivered a new £1.4 million classroom block on behalf of Torbay Council in partnership with TDA, an award-winning provider of business and property services across the South West. The new three-storey classroom block features six classrooms and three dry changing rooms.

Prior to this, Morgan Sindall Construction refurbished two of the school’s classrooms into state-of-the-art science labs.

Paul Cockram, area lead and operations manager at Morgan Sindall Construction, said: “Torquay Academy’s significant investment into its teaching, sport and creative offering will help to enrich the lives of all students, creating a well-rounded, modern facility that provides an exceptional learning experience.
“The latest stage of expansion work marks the continuation of our ongoing partnership with Torquay Academy, which has been a truly collaborative process. Morgan Sindall Construction has a long-standing history of delivering first class educational facilities and we hope that everyone at the school is delighted with the new addition to their growing campus.”
Headteacher at Torquay Academy, Steve Margetts, said: “I am delighted with our incredible new building. Morgan Sindall Construction has built a truly inspirational space for our students to be able to enjoy.”

Morgan Sindall Construction is currently on site at major projects across the region. In Exeter, the company has recently been appointed to deliver a £13.5 million programme of essential maintenance work within the Harrison Building for the University of Exeter.
