Project description

Design and construction of a state-of-the-art 210 place Special Education Needs (SEN) school for 3-19 year olds. The new two-storey timber framed building includes 26 spacious classrooms, a hydrotherapy pool and specialist facilities to help meet the young peoples’ sensory needs. This includes swing therapy rooms and a trampoline room to help promote body awareness, sequencing, postural control and organisation of senses.

The team has also created an independent living area within the school that helps older students prepare for adulthood; and an immersive room that uses projection imagery to provide a range of environments for students to become accustomed to.

Constructed next to two live education campuses, including the existing Glenwood School, the team shaped their works around the two academic calendars, whilst also creating a learning and immersive experience for the two sets of students surrounding the build. The project was delivered under our partnering framework with Essex County Council.

Enhancing communities

Enhancing communities

Morgan Sindall staff spent a whole volunteer day sprucing up the adjacent Montgomery School’s grounds by creating a new outdoor area. This included learning areas, growing patches and new fencing.
Improving The Environment

Improving The Environment

Passive approach to design with the Essex Breathing Buildings model used to underpin the natural ventilation strategy. This resulted in a leading air test result of 1.67m3.h-1.m-2@50Pa.
Working Together With Our Supply Chain

Working Together With Our Supply Chain

Six apprentices were placed in partnership with our Services Engineer DPL to develop and qualify the next generation of engineers.
Protecting people

Protecting people

The project handed over RIDDOR Free, with zero reportable incidents.
Developing people

Developing people

Regular work experience placements employed on the project from Southend and South Essex Colleges. These students were given one and two week placements to learn about engineering, site management and commercial surveying roles.

Challenges

Working on a live campus, next to two schools, with a shared site entrance with the schools, Morgan Sindall had to carefully coordinate logistics. A dedicated gateman was employed for the duration and logistics schedules were regularly planned with headteachers.

Meeting the complex SEN needs called for bespoke solutions. This included specially designed hoisting systems in the hydrotherapy pool, a robust timber wall structure to protect against any damage, Furniture, Fixtures and Equipment design coordination around the specific use of individual therapy rooms, and liaison with the school to ensure building layout and wayfinding worked with their education needs.

Testimonials

“Part of Morgan Sindall's Customer Charter included the aspiration that the new Glenwood feels like the old Glenwood. It still felt like home! We have a shiny new body, but the same heart - I could feel it, it made my day. Thank you to all involved in this amazing journey!”
