Award winning tunnel network completed

Morgan Sindall, in a joint venture with VINCI Construction Grands Projets, played a major role in Europe’s largest construction project by designing the temporary works and constructing all the bored
tunnelling works for Heathrow Airport’s new Terminal 5.

The works consisted of more than 14 kilometres of tunnels including the airside road tunnel (awarded ‘British Tunnelling Society UK Project of the Year’ in 2006), the Heathrow express extension, the Piccadilly underground line extension and junction, and storm water outfall and service tunnels. The tunnels had to be driven beneath live airport taxiways and aircraft stands without any disturbance to airport operations.
