Tunnel under the Thames provides a new network link

Work began in May 2005 to build the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) 2.5 kilometre extension and station from the existing North Greenwich station to a new station at Woolwich Arsenal. It opened in January 2009, seven weeks ahead of programme. The project included civil engineering works, tunnelling, piling, communications systems and associated rail works. Two 1.8 kilometre, 6 metre diameter tunnels were constructed under the River Thames and an intervention shaft, 15 metres in diameter and 40 metres deep, was built adjacent to the Thames River wall. A head house accommodates the power distribution and communication systems.

The new station provides new platforms for DLR and fully integrates into the existing Network Rail station. The station is on three levels, with two pedestrian entrances and exits to street level.
