Bridging the gap in Scotland

Lammerlaws road bridge spans the East Coast Mainline on the north coast of the Firth of the Forth and is the main access to Burntisland’s award-winning beach.

Network Rail and Fife Council jointly funded the replacement of the existing road bridge, which was severely corroded by steam trains and failed a bridge safety assessment in 2003.

Concerns over the residual strength of the deck led to its closure in 2004. Feasibility reports commissioned by Network Rail and Fife Council concluded that the existing bridge deck should be replaced with a new deck designed to current highways loading standards for 40-tonne commercial vehicles.
