Extra lanes to improve congestion and safety

The current A1 is an all-purpose two lane dual carriageway, carrying in the region of 45-54,000 vehicles per day, which fails to meet today’s standards for layout and alignment. This project consists of the
upgrading of 38 kilometres of the existing A1 trunk road in North Yorkshire to a dual three-lane motorway. Work also includes constructing hard shoulders, all ancillary works and a single carriageway local access road for non motorway traffic.
