Extension to London's light railway

The project involved a 4.4 kilometre extension of the Docklands Light
Railway (DLR) from Canning Town to King George V dock, of which
2.8 kilometres is elevated viaduct.

Works included the design and construction of four new Disability
Discrimination Act (DDA)compliant stations, complete with lifts,
footbridges and access ramps. One of these stations is integrated with
the London City Airport terminal building. The works also included the
installation, testing and commissioning of track, power, mechanical
and electrical, communications and signalling systems.

An innovative segmental construction technique was used to build
the elevated section of the route which passes through a heavily
built-up area. This incorporated gantry working and precast elements
produced on site which resulted in reduced construction time, a narrower
working corridor and a reduction in the environmental impact. Effective
management of the supply chain and product development was also key
to the success of the project, which was delivered early and on
budget, helping Morgan Sindall to win the subsequent contract to
construct the Woolwich Arsenal section of DLR.
