 Maintenance Hangar Manchester Airport

We undertook the design and construction of a new single bay hangar at Manchester Airport for British Airways.

The hangar accommodates aircraft up to the size of a Boeing 747- 400 for maintenance of aircraft belonging to British Airways and other international airlines.

The works included the construction of a new hangar with a 71.4 metre roof span over a 5,000 square metres floor area with a two-storey office block, workshop, canteen facilities and stores all making the building self-sufficient.

Fully automatic hangar doors provide clear access across the buildings’ entire width. The doors, each being 12 metres by 17 metres can be fully opened within 150 seconds and include the latest safe start technology, with provision of automatic shut-down if doors are obstructed and manual operation in the event of power failure.

At the rear of the building, two giant water tanks, each 11 metres by 10 metres, store water for the deluge fire protection system.

A small store adjoining the hangar holds a range of aircraft spares, consumable materials, tools and equipment required for maintenance tasks. A support workshop provides space for minor component reworks and upholstery refurbishment.
