SS Great Britain
We were asked to undertake the complete design and construction of a large dehumidified chamber to preserve the hull of Brunel’s iconic steamship, the ss Great Britain. The client required the project to be ready in time for 19 July 2005, the same date the ship was originally launched in 1843 and the same date it was returned to Bristol in 1970.
A major influencing factor in the construction works and subsequent project programming was that the ss Great Britain had to remain open as a tourist attraction during the construction works, bringing numerous technical challenges. Running concurrently with the external hull restoration protection, the works inside the ship had to be planned to minimise the disruption to the public.
