Shipbuilding Facility 

We constructed this purpose-built 3,000-tonne plus assembly facility within Portsmouth’s historic naval shipyard.

 

This is an industrial building on an impressive scale, housing two tiers of heavy-duty overhead cranes. The marriage of traditional steel structural forms, scaled-up to optimise the use of secondary framing components produced an efficient structural design solution.

 

The structures themselves were impressive and challenging to build. The construction and assembly halls are 43mx130mx20m high and 52mx130mx42m high, with 400T gantry cranes. The associated steel fabrication hall was a conversion of building 2/56, including a 76m x15m extension.
