St. Thomas Primary School
The new St. Thomas primary School building is sited on Waterloo Road, opposite the existing school. The two-storey building comprises a recreation hall with sprung floor, classrooms, library, computer suite, fully equipped kitchen, dining room and staff room. In addition, pupils will be treated to an outdoor multi use games area, cycle tracks and a climbing frame.
We incorporated a range of eco-friendly features to the new building. The school has been built on stilts, in order to negate the one in 100-year risk of flooding at the site. A series of raised platforms will lead to a walkway, which will allow children to safely evacuate the school in the event of flooding.
Surface water will run into a new pond, which is expected to become a haven for wildlife, as well as a useful teaching resource. The initiative also reduces the amount of water discharged into the River Irk.
