Cityspace, University of Sunderland
The new sports and social centre provides the university of Sunderland with a new facility that signals the regeneration of the university’s City Campus.
The building is to be constructed on a key strategic location for the university, being the site of the existing Wearmouth Hall. This called for a building to ‘recreate’ the impact of the original Wearmouth Hall and the proposed design responds to these requirements through the use of bold forms, materials, light and clear architectural intent and integrity. With an emphasis of glass and light in the main facades, and the use of large format elements of solid and void to create a sculptural building, the scheme sets out a new vision for the university and kick starts the development of an ambitious masterplan to radically regenerate the university.
