Back to school for Hull's new construction workers

Oakfield School project manager Mark Chitty and apprentice Ryan BarrA new generation of construction workers in East Yorkshire is cutting its teeth on the Hull Building Schools for the Future (BSF) scheme, helping to deliver new school campuses across the city – and leading construction, infrastructure and design company, Morgan Sindall is looking for more to join them.

Over 50 apprentices have already been recruited by Morgan Sindall and its supply chain since the BSF scheme launched in 2009. This followed a pledge by Hull Esteem Consortium, the partnership delivering the project, to create over 200 apprenticeship opportunities in the city.

The apprentices have been working on the completed Archbishop Sentamu Academy and Winifred Holtby and Tweendykes School and are currently on site at the Andrew Marvell Business & Enterprise College, Kingswood College of Arts and Oakfield School.

Ryan Barr, a site engineer apprentice who worked on the Winifred Holtby and Tweendykes School and Oakfield School, says: “The ability to earn whilst studying at college and working on site has been invaluable to me as it has given me good grounding in construction that I otherwise wouldn’t have learnt on paper. Not only have I grown my knowledge of construction and engineering but I have also boosted my confidence as I have been given responsibility on site.”

Ryan is one of 55 apprentices specifically recruited by Morgan Sindall and its supply chain to learn a variety of trades including joinery, plumbing, plastering, ground working and brick working.

Steffan Speer, BSF general manager for Morgan Sindall, says: “The apprentice programme is a fantastic way for young people who are looking to make a career in the construction industry to get valuable hands-on experience while studying their chosen trade.


“The BSF scheme is having a huge impact on the city – not only is it renewing and upgrading the education estate of Hull, but the new generation of construction workers who have learnt new skills working on the scheme is a great legacy to leave.

“We are looking to recruit more apprentices to hone their skills on the Hull BSF scheme. This is a fantastic opportunity for people to work on such a significant project for the city and widen their knowledge of the construction industry, whilst making themselves more attractive to potential employers when they come to look for full-time work.”
