Morgan Sindall awarded £13 million Midland Metro depot project

23 Mar 09:15

Morgan Sindall has won a £13 million project to extend and enhance Centro’s Wednesbury depot in preparation for the arrival of a new fleet of trams.

In order to keep the existing tram service running without disruption, Morgan Sindall will be carrying out the improvement works around the depot’s day-to-day operations.

The project will include extending both ends of the existing maintenance building as well as upgrading and refurbishing office and staff welfare facilities. In addition, a new testing and commissioning building will be constructed as well as various power and signalling upgrade works. The trams’ track layout will also be amended to provide greater flexibility of movement around the depot.

Jag Paddam, managing director of Infrastructure at Morgan Sindall, says: “This is our first project for Centro and we look forward to working with them and delivering a project of which they can be proud.

“We offered a range of value engineering approaches which were enthusiastically received by the customer and which will help to ensure that both expectations and budgets are met.”

Councillor Tom Ansell, lead member for rail and Metro for Centro, says: “This is an exciting development for the Midland Metro. The expansion of the Wednesbury depot will create 15 jobs as part of the £128 million project to extend the line into the very heart of Birmingham and buy new and bigger trams.

“Once completed, the line expansion will result in 1,300 new jobs and be worth £50 million a year in added Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to the West Midlands regional economy.

“Morgan Sindall has been appointed to the job after a rigorous tendering procedure, having demonstrated a thorough understanding of their brief and approaching the whole process in a thorough and professional manner.”

Work is already underway and is due to be completed in June 2013.
