Morgan Sindall has been awarded a circa £8 million contract to refurbish the subsurface platforms of Liverpool’s underground stations.
The programme of improvement works taking place on platforms at James Street, Lime Street and Central Stations will involve replacing wall claddings to tunnels, escalators and passageways as well as retiling the floors and platforms. Passenger access at Central Station will also be improved with the replacement of three escalators.
Morgan Sindall’s broad range of skills and experience across construction, infrastructure and design meant that they were able to offer customer Network Rail a single integrated solution.

“Our team is accustomed to working in live environments. On this project, whilst a number of the stations themselves will be closed, we will be undertaking a series of night time working schedules so that trains can continue to pass through and thus minimise disruption to the travelling public.”
Construction starts in April and the project is due for completion by August 2013.
Morgan Sindall’s extensive portfolio of rail projects includes the recently completed roof renewal works at Paddington and Marylebone Stations in London and the £7 million improvement works to Edinburgh’s Waverley Station Princes Street entrance. In April 2011, Morgan Sindall was awarded the £50 million C350 Pudding Mill Lane contract to link the new Crossrail tunnels to the Network Rail infrastructure in the London Borough of Newham.
In August 2011, a joint venture between Colas Rail and Morgan Sindall was appointed to Network Rail’s Enhancements Multi Asset Framework Agreement (MAFA) to carry out rail improvement works on the Western route, an area between Paddington, the west of England and South Wales. The anticipated turnover for this work is circa £200 million and will run until April 2014. The joint venture is also currently completing a project at Cambridge Station to design, install and commission a new island platform in order to be able to run longer trains on key commuter services.
In addition, the company’s specialist Rail Electrification team is currently laying new overhead line electrification foundations and installing high voltage, low voltage and telecoms cables on Route 7 of the Great Eastern route.
