Double-win for £71.4 million Airbus project at Constructing Excellence in Wales Awards

A £71.4 million project to create a new high-tech composite wing assembly facility in Broughton, Flintshire, has received two awards.

The project team, consisting of Airbus Operations Limited, construction and infrastructure company Morgan Sindall, and its 12 supply chain partners, are working together to deliver the 52,000m² Airbus North Factory. Members of the team attended the Constructing Excellence in Wales Awards dinner on Friday, 2 July, where they picked up accolades for integration and collaborative working and innovation.

The completed factory will enable the assembly of wings for the new A350XWB aircraft seen as pivotal in the development of the UK aviation industry.

Presenting the award for Integration and Collaborative Working, the judges said they were impressed with the collaborative “one team approach” between all partners and added that the clear vision and personal commitment of the entire team was a key to its success. The team were praised for their open plan shared office, open book commercial approach and honest reporting wall system.

The project team also scooped the Innovation Award for adopting a unique process which played a key role in helping the project achieve Government targets on waste and low/zero carbon emissions.

Working closely with Siltbuster Limited, specialists in waste water management, the project team, led by subcontractors ASH Waste Services, incorporated Siltbuster’s patented concrete washwater treatment system onto the site. The RCW (Roadside Concrete Washout) system is an innovative and environmentally compliant solution, designed specifically to treat high pH concrete and mortar washwater.

The two-stage treatment method is unique in today’s market and tackles environmental challenges within the construction industry. It has the ability to neutralise the pH level of washwater to the level required by environmental legislation, enabling the water to be discharged to ground with no harmful effects on the environment.

“We are delighted the project has been recognised in this way,” says David Hogan, Morgan Sindall project director. “This achievement recognises the entire team effort working together on this nationally important project. The success of this project stems from the close relationship we have developed with Airbus and all the supply chain partners.”

Morgan Sindall is working with design and engineering consultancy Morgan Sindall Professional Services to deliver the scheme. Morgan Sindall Professional Services is designing the facility, providing architectural, civil and structural engineering design and the concept design for the mechanical and electrical services.

The awards were held at SWALEC Stadium in Cardiff and welcomed an audience of more than 460 people to celebrate the very best in Welsh construction.
