Morgan Sindall has started work on a landmark £3.8 million scheme which will see a former science block at Linton Village College replaced with brand-new state-of-the-art teaching facilities.

Morgan Sindall, which has offices at Babraham Road, Sawston, has demolished the college’s now-defunct Vic Hallam Building to make way for a new two-storey building which will house teaching, office and administration facilities, a library and a multi-purpose hall. The new facilities will incorporate a number of sustainable features, including a solar-powered hot water system, which will help the building to achieve a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’.

Work on the new facilities, which is due to be completed in August 2011, will be preceded by an archaeological investigation of the site by the Oxford Archaeology Unit.

Morgan Sindall is carrying out work at Linton Village College as part of a framework agreement with Cambridgeshire County Council. The company is one of seven firms selected by the council to deliver construction projects under its seven-year education building programme which is worth more than £200 million.

To mark the start of demolition work, Linton Village College principal Caroline Derbyshire joined Morgan Sindall’s construction team on site and looked on as the excavators moved in.

“I am delighted by the way in which the demolition was managed,” says Caroline. “Watching the old building being torn down was great entertainment for us all and we are excited about the new facilities we will gain when the building is completed.”
