Sustainable constructors Morgan Sindall on schedule to deliver new health centre for NHS Doncaster

A construction company delivering a new multi-million pound primary health centre for NHS Doncaster hopes to reduce the environmental impact of the scheme by recycling building materials.

Morgan Sindall is recycling the materials from the recently demolished Doncaster Trades and Labour Club at Sepulchre Gate West in order to create a pioneering healthcare facility on the same site in the town centre. Construction work on the new health centre has just started.

The Leeds-based firm has been contracted to build the £6.5 million project, called The Town Hub primary care centre, for Doncaster Community Solutions – a public private partnership between Community Solutions for Primary Care, NHS Doncaster, Doncaster Metropolitan Council and Community Health Partnerships.

The four-storey Town Hub will accommodate a GP practice, dentistry facilities to give a greater range of accessibility to Doncaster, a pharmacy and a drop-in centre. It will also feature community facilities for people working in the town centre and for residents of Hexthorpe and Balby. It will be built under the Government’s NHS Local Improvement Finance Trust (LIFT) initiative.

“As a sustainable construction company we not only strive to reduce the amount of waste material associated with projects like this, but we are also committed to cutting our carbon footprint by limiting the transportation of goods,” says Paul Limb, Morgan Sindall project manager.

"We will be using local labour resources where possible and hope to employ at least 55 per cent from within a 20-mile radius of the Doncaster area. This is an important project for the local community and we are confident we can deliver a first-class facility.”

The ground works phase is already underway following the demolition of the Club. The foundations of the centre will be made using a mixture of concrete column bases and piling. The steel structure is scheduled for erection in July.

Once completed, The Town Hub will be a triangular-shaped building with sustainable features such as photovoltaic and solar panels, air source heat pumps and rainwater harvesting.

Morgan Sindall has also been contracted to build the new £5.9 million Conisbrough Primary Care Centre in Gardens Lane, Conisbrough, for Doncaster Community Solutions, as part of the same NHS LIFT contract.
