1,000-tonne crane completes major phase of multi-million pound project

Construction company Morgan Sindall called on the help of one of the biggest cranes in the country to complete a mammoth stage in the creation of a £217 million public service hub for Wigan.

The 1,000-tonne piece of machinery had to be escorted into Wigan town centre by police and was supported by seven articulated lorries.

The crane made short work of positioning the main roof truss on the new Wigan Life Centre. The crane was built up by using a 150-tonne slave crane, the giant machine lifted the metal truss structure, which is 38 metres long, weighs 52 tonnes and is eight metres in depth, into place to provide support for the roof.

Once completed, the Wigan Life Centre will create a one-stop-shop for all public services, delivered in the borough by Wigan Council and its partners. Public services will be located in three zones – Healthy Living, Information and Learning, and Neighbourhoods. There will also be new 25-metre and learner swimming pools, in addition to a gymnasium, café and communal area.

Morgan Sindall was chosen to carry out the construction by the Access Consortium, comprising Morgan Sindall Investments and HOCHTIEF PPP Solutions (UK), a subsidiary of HOCHTIEF Concessions. HOCHTIEF Facility Management UK will manage the complex once it is open. Morgan Sindall has appointed LCE Architects and AStudio Architects to provide architectural design for the facilities. Design, engineering and project management consultancy, Morgan Sindall Professional Services is providing the civil, structural and mechanical and electrical engineering design.

Work is now continuing on the erection of the structural steel frame and installation of precast concrete lifts, stairs and terracing. The installation of the curtain walling, cladding, and window system has commenced. Once this stage is complete, construction on the swimming pools can begin.
