Partnering with Nottingham boxing charity to support disadvantaged young people

The Nottingham School of Boxing and Switch-Uphave announced a new partnership with Morgan Sindall Construction.

The move sees the Midlands-headquartered main contractor working with the two charities – both part of the Marcellus Baz group – to support disadvantaged young people in the region.

The charities engage with around 800 young people at any one time. They aim to instil confidence, tolerance, discipline and self-esteem through boxing and mentorship, with the goal of steering people away from crime and into further education, training or employment.

Morgan Sindall Construction will be helping the charities meet the cost of employing in-house mentors, counsellors and teachers, in addition to training and equipment.

The company is also working to provide employment opportunities and advice on the rewarding career paths that the construction industry can offer.

Hassan Imtiaz, a young boxer at the school who graduated from Nottingham Trent University earlier this year, has just secured a position as graduate site manager.

Sean Bowles, managing director of Morgan Sindall Construction in the Midlands, said: “For regeneration to be more than just a buzz word, economic development needs to reach disadvantaged communities and drive socially inclusive growth.
“Vulnerable young people need mentors they can relate to, and access to the education and employment opportunities to better themselves. The business community has a vital role to play here; both in backing initiatives like Marcellus’, and offering a foot on the ladder to promising talent who may otherwise go unrecognised.
“We’re committed to engaging meaningfully in the communities in which we operate and proud to partner with Marcellus on his inspiring work in Nottingham.”
Marcellus Baz BEM, founder and managing director of the charities, said: “It’s fantastic that yet another local business is getting involved and supporting the organisation.
“We hope that this encourages more businesses to find a way to help those young people in Nottingham that desperately need support, with not just resources but also a place they can escape violence and crime.”

Marcellus Baz set up the Nottingham School of Boxing back in 2013 after falling victim to a knife attack, which meant that he was no longer able to pursue a career in professional boxing. Instead, he set up the school as a way to discourage other young people from violence and crime with boxing and mentoring, which has evolved into the Marcellus Baz Group.
