New £17.8 million academic building for University of Sussex

The University of Sussex has appointed Morgan Sindall to design and build a new £17.8 million academic building which will house the School of Law, Politics and Sociology, the School of Business, Management at Economics.  It will be the biggest lecture theatre on the University’s campus, at Falmer.

The new building will cover 8000m² and will feature a number of sustainable technologies such as a sedum roof and rainwater harvesting.  Morgan Sindall will be employing 50 local companies to work on the project with up to 200 construction workers on site at the project’s peak.

“This is our ninth project at the University of Sussex, having recently completed a new teaching block also at the Falmer campus,” says Richard Watts, Morgan Sindall area director.  “The higher education market is presenting a number of opportunities for us and as always we will be working with as many local subcontractors on this scheme as possible to ensure the benefits of the project are felt locally.”

Professor Clare Mackie, the University’s pro-vice-chancellor for Teaching and Learning, says: “The new academic building forms part of our long-term strategy for top-quality facilities that will enhance the teaching and learning environment for our students and academics.”

Work begins on site in October and is due to complete in April 2012.
