Morgan Sindall plc has completed work on a new café for the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery and other units in Napier Lines in Woolwich.

Café 24 will provide an easy option for hard-working soldiers at the barracks to pick up a bite to eat close to their workplace, and will supplement the main catering facilities available at the base.

The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery is a ceremonial unit of the British Army, which had been based at barracks in St. John’s Wood for 200 years. Morgan Sindall previously constructed a state-of-the-art facility for the unit to use as their new home on the former workshops and gun lines of the Royal Artillery in Woolwich. The company is currently nearing completion on the final phase of the scheme; the construction of a new biomass sustainable energy system for the King’s Troop.

The burger van, which previously provided food and refreshments for soldiers in this vicinity, had to be relocated as a result of the Morgan Sindall construction work, and as such, it was decided to replace the burger van with a cafe.

An unused boiler room was chosen as the new location for the café and was refurbished and equipped by the project team.

Clem Adekoyejo, Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) Senior Project Manager, said: ”This project is a fantastic example of how we are supporting our armed forces by providing the right facilities in the right place to meet their needs. This project showcased collaborative working at its best between London District, Woolwich Station and King’s Troop as our customers and end users, DIO as the delivery organisation and Morgan Sindall and Sodexho as our industry partners.”

Richard Frape, senior contracts manager at Morgan Sindall, said: “We’re delighted to have refurbished and refreshed this disused boiler room to provide the hard-working men and women based at Woolwich with a pleasant and convenient café. This will be a relaxing space where they will be able to stop and grab a healthy, tasty lunch or breakfast, or a quick snack, in close proximity to their places of work. Café 24 makes great use of the space available and we’re very pleased to have been able to work in partnership with the DIO and Sodexo to deliver this useful facility.”
