Morgan Sindall appointed to deliver £70 million Birmingham regeneration project

Morgan Sindall has been appointed by regeneration specialist St. Modwen to deliver its £70 million Longbridge town centre development in Birmingham.

The construction and infrastructure company will shortly begin work on the scheme which will create a thriving commercial, leisure and retail destination and is set to generate more than 1,000 new jobs.

The development will be anchored by an 85,000 sq ft Sainsbury’s, a 75-bed hotel, which is now under offer, 24 shops and restaurants, offices and car parking, all of which are scheduled for completion in 2013.

Morgan Sindall is already on-site at Longbridge, constructing Birmingham City Council’s new ‘myplace’ youth centre which is scheduled to open this summer.

Julian Price, area manager at Morgan Sindall, says: “Longbridge is a transformational regeneration project which will deliver a new heart for the town centre. We’re looking forward to building on our strong relationship with St. Modwen and Birmingham City Council through our work on the new ‘myplace’ centre and this next phase in what is a very important project for the area.”

The regeneration of Longbridge is a £1 billion project covering 468 acres. It aspires to create 10,000 jobs through a diverse range of industries, together with 2,000 new homes, the new town centre, parks and public open spaces.

Central to the town centre scheme will be the two acre Austin Park which will lead to the opening up of the River Rea for the first time in 100 years. The development will also create new access roads and improvements to the local road network.

Mark Batchelor, construction manager for St. Modwen says: “The town centre will play a key role in the transformation of the former MG Rover Works. Along with the recently opened Bournville College, 113 houses and apartments being constructed at the Park View scheme and the new ‘myplace’ youth centre, Longbridge is fast establishing itself as a vibrant community.”
